How to play Exact Number
Exact Number is a head-to-head challenge of general knowledge and intuition. The game asks a question with a real numerical answer, such as “In what year did the Titanic sink?” or “How many bones are in the adult human skeleton?”, and keeps the number secret. The two challengers take turns guessing: after each attempt the screen says whether the number is higher or lower, and the thermometer narrows the remaining range. Whoever hits the exact number wins the round.
Step-by-step rules
- Enter the names of the two challengers and press “Start the challenge”.
- The host reads the question. The starting range is shown above the thermometer: 0-100 for percentages, a historical span for years, a wider range for measurements and quantities.
- The player whose turn it is says a number out loud, the host types it in and presses Enter.
- If it's not the right number, HIGHER or LOWER appears: the range shrinks and the turn passes to the other player.
- Whoever guesses the exact number scores one point. The other challenger starts the next round.
- If a question doesn't work for you, “Reveal and skip question” shows the answer and starts a new round without awarding points.
How many players do you need?
Exact Number is designed for 2 challengers plus a host, but it also works great with two teams: teammates confer before calling out a number. A round lasts a minute or two, so it's perfect as a quick duel between other games.
Strategy: how to guess in fewer attempts
- Use what you know: even a vague idea of the answer (“it's after World War II”) gives you a good starting number.
- Learn from your opponent: every “higher” or “lower” applies to you too.
- Split it in half: if you have no idea, say the number in the middle of the remaining range. It's binary search, the fastest strategy.
- Take calculated risks: sometimes it pays to go for the number you think is right instead of halving the range.
More than 80 general knowledge questions
Questions cover history, science, geography, sport, film, technology and fun facts about the human body. The answers are real, verifiable numbers, so every round is also a chance to learn something new.
Frequently asked questions
Is the score saved?
Yes: points go to the first two teams in the “Your teams” panel and stay saved on your device even if you close the page.
Can more than two people play?
Yes, by splitting into two teams. Each team confers and a spokesperson calls out the number.
What if nobody knows the answer?
The game still works: with the “higher” and “lower” clues you'll always find the number, at worst in a few more attempts.
Are the answers accurate?
Answers are based on commonly accepted reference figures. Where a measurement is approximate, the question says so.
